How to find your palette
HOW TO FIND YOUR PALETTE
When I walk into a fine arts shop, the first thing that comes to mind is joy.. A nourishing and stimulating pleasure at the same time. All those colors around me are like an orchestra starting to play because when they’re there all together they’re just powerful!
Then comes the moment when I return to planet earth completely disoriented because I know that I will not be able to take all those wonderful watercolors with me, but I will have to choose.
Choosing a color palette is part of the creative process. In fact the colors along with the shapes and composition and that magic that puts the artist are part of the final result. I would like to leave aside for today the question of the quality of the colors and which brand to choose, and instead focus on how to create the right colors for the project that I have in mind.
The abstract landscapes I create need a fairly limited palette, even three colors can be enough to create an original watercolor design.
Usually I start from three colors that I prepare in the blender, (I love this blender, it reminds me of a' animal’s footprint) and I start mixing them together. I have no rules or recipes is simply a process, also very relaxing and satisfying, in which I experiment.
I try all the combinations until I meet (you can talk about meeting) the color to work with.
When you create the colors so that each has in itself a drop of the other they will definitely be fine together creating a harmony. Sometimes it is necessary to generate contrasts and then there you start from two complementary colors as in this drawing.
If you are tempted to experiment in finding your own palette of colors I will wait for you at one of my watercolor courses in Perugia, sometimes I also hold workshops on particular techniques.
